A team of researchers and computer scientists at the University of Newcastle, England, has developed a number of gadgets and electronics to improve the quality of life of older people, especially those with dementia or similar diseases.
The work includes a GPS, the location of the elderly in shopping malls or public places, kitchen accessories and other items of dailyuse. By Pablo Javier Piacente Scientific Trends. A team of researchers and computer scientists at the University of Newcastle, England, has developed a number of gadgets and electronics to improve the quality of life of older people, especially those with dementia or similar diseases.
Research has bases in Newcastle, Aberdeen and Nottingham, and is directed by Professor Paul Watson, Director of the North East Regional e-Science Centre, one of the research centers that depend on the School of Computing Science at the University of Newcastle.
According to a report published in The Journal and a press release of that university, the program is funded by the British government, as part of an ambitious general who has the support of companies Microsoft, IBM and Philips and whose central purpose the use of new technology to improve the quality of human life at all stages of their existence.
The idea is to ensure the inclusion of all people on digital life, especially children, elderly and disabled, who are the neediest. In this context, the research conducted by Watson develops a basic theme for the elderly. Worth mentioning that according to statistics, by 2050 there will be more people over 65 years under 16 in the UK.
In order to meet the needs of older people, the devices show created a simple design and an intuitive interface, as for example in GPS location technology designed to maintain independence in the mobility of elderly people with varying degrees of dementia .

The International Centre for Advanced Technology (CITA) of Ruipérez Sánchez Germain Foundation, based in Peñaranda de Bracamonte (Salamanca), is involved in a project called Smart Research on interactive whiteboard (experts and known as IDPs) in classrooms , which runs until 2010 and which also involved 25 schools in Spain and Portugal. Leading this initiative is Pere Marqués Graells, professor of Educational Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Director of Teaching and Research Group Multimedia, and one of Spain’s leading experts in digital whiteboard.
“The PDI is an instrument that projected onto a white board all the information a computer can be connected to the internet, where everything is, so that creates the opportunities to share information and learn,” he says. In his view, the use of whiteboards requires little technical training, since “what is projected on a screen,” but also “with a pointer become touch screens and pen mode, which is known as ink digital, we can write up to include notes, for example, a picture of a piece of architecture. “
Despite this apparent simplicity, the CITA project and 25 schools aims to assess the implementation of this educational tool in the 25 centers that provide almost all IDPs in their classrooms. The idea is gradually to train teachers, implement new methodologies, overcome the problems which arise and achieve after two years that all teachers are excited and master the tool, “says Marquis.
“In my group we have over five years doing research. Teachers like this technology because it is easy and convenient, and believes that students are more motivated, “he says. Thanks to her, “are those students who project to the class work they have done and these views and participate more.”
However, this favorable response does not seem to be reflected in academic performance. “90% of teachers believe their students learn more, but then most do not get better grades. Given this disparity of data, the debate is what kind of activities being evaluated, “said the specialist, pointing to the possibility of change to change the criteria and the ways in examining knowledge.
So great is the revolution of new technologies? “Speaking of new technologies in general is dangerous because working with the PDI is very different than any other type of activity at the computer, which is a powerful tool.” In any case, offer “the ability to copy, paste, compile information of the moment” and, according to studies on information processing, thus further stimulates the right hemisphere, because it works more the image, and has different impact on learning, “he explains. So, your group will present new research next year with 20 centers, which include not only IDPs but also computer on the desk, “to see what can be done with both.”
In any case, “technology always leads to changes in the way of working. The board ended the lecture, the book released to the student of the transience of the word, and each tool can introduce new activities to facilitate learning. Before the digital whiteboard, blackboard and the book and have allowed the student to go at their own pace and not at the pace of the speaker, “says the expert.
Currently, there are two types of digital whiteboard, the interactive and what is not.Between 5 and 10% of classrooms have one, a figure that is “under the United Kingdom and ahead of Italy,” said the biologist, who believes that Spain is still at a level of the challenges intermedio.Uno is creating content for this new technology. “There are publishers who are making efforts, we must move forward in this line, create platforms for content and search of resources to facilitate the work of the teacher”
The year 2010 looks busy for the Acer Group in Taiwan. Already firmly on the area of smartphones, it should present various electronic gadgets and a portal for downloading applications.
We mentioned as early as March 2009 but is finally somewhere in 2010 that Taiwan’s Acer Group is expected to launch its owndownload portal applications, which will offer “hundreds of software, otherwise it is not the penalty call download portal, “said Jim Wong, president of the group’s IT products division, whose remarks were echoed by Bloomberg, throwing a spear competitors eager to start their own even without solid content.
The portal should be accessible to various products from Acer (smartphones and netbooks) and launched in mid-year. It will provide applications compatible with Android, Chrome, Windows and Windows Mobile, as free or paid, so that interested developers and attract buyers who can customize their hardware Acer.
Readers e-paper made the show at CES in Las Vegas in early January 2010. Acer will also own, has a monochrome display e-paper 6 “Ave a first launch planned in five countries of the European market, easier to access than the U.S. which are firmly implanted Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble.
Distribution agreements with publishers are under negotiation to provide content. Acer wants to profit from the forecast growth for this type of device while the market is currently structured.

Between traditional PBX players are well positioned and start-ups to limited staff, the Post Office who wanted to install a VoIP solution in a new building, made a bold choice by awarding the contract to an SME. The beginning of a collaborative, value-added grew over time.
Two moves in quick succession in 2 years for a body of nearly 1,000 people and the need to settle in an old building where thenetwork needs to be redone. “Simplify, save, make the choice of VoIP, a technology that has market recognition,” offers Olivier Lenoir, head of IT infrastructure of the service at La Poste, which launches in 2007 containing a tender specifications providing 800 to 1,000 positions.
The traditional players are well positioned PBX and offer peak loads up to 30,000 jobs. But then, budgets are poorly understood … For the traditional PBX players have made an effort on the huge commercial IP phones they offer at competitive prices. But their business model does not allow them to engage on standard billing means services will be charged again, any new connection to the workstation as well. As for the French players in the VoIP, that are start-ups.
One of them, Proformatique, created three years ago but which in 2010 merged with Avencall, expert of Asterisk, a standard that has proven itself across the Atlantic and won for its strength and functional flexibility, moved XiVO its solution. “But will they align with the field teams sufficient to connect the phones on time? The Open Source VoIP Solution XiVO, will he good communications if hundreds of people are online at the same time? It was entitled to ask these questions, “recalls Olivier Lenoir, behind the tender. The Post did, however, a bold choice and “the tender was won narrowly by Proformatique, given the selection criteria set by equation, the overall cost of the investment, references and the structure of the provider” Olivier Lenoir said.
